The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].
Question: Good morning Mayor,
I have a very important question. Are you able to text 911 in N.J? Because if g-d forbid there is a shooting, you won’t be able to call because they will hear you.
Thank you,
A concerned resident
PS: Thank you for being the best mayor!
Response from Mayor Coles: Good afternoon,
I checked with the chief & there is no 911 text function right now. He said that in an emergency, dial 911 and just leave the phone open. They will be able to identify your location & send help.

To the best of my knowledge NJ has 911 texting enabled.
Please check this link for more information,
Thank you.

It seems your right,I checked the link. Maybe the mayor made a mistake?
I don’t mean to contradict anyone, however, I have personally been in 911 Ocean County Sheriff call center (where all 911 calls are routed through) and they indeed to receive 911 texts. (I’ve watched them come in – mostly people checking of it works…). While it’s possible Lakewood is not hooked up with the texting system (that I do not know) if you text, a county dispatch will indeed receive your text.
Iam confused the mayor says no but sheriff says yes.
You can check the link the first person the guy wrote-it is very informative.
Yes 911 sms works my kids tried it and I got a call back.
That is so dumb! The whole reason for texting is that you don’t want your phone to ring or make noise! You should have gotten a text back!
What’s stupid is allowing anyone to use the 9-1-1 for anything besides an emergency. Kids being kids isn’t an excuse.
