In Lakewood and across the country, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has experienced significant delays in delivering mail to their recipients. This has led to much anger and frustration with the USPS, and has likely caused many to either lose out on income opportunities or incur fees for late payments, among a myriad of other issues that have arisen due to the delays.
Part of the issue is due to the fact that mail carriers are only allowed to deliver mail within their allotted times. That means if their shift is over, anyone on the mailman’s route who hadn’t received their mail within his shift have to wait at least until the next day to get their mail. Is it ridiculous? Sure. But it’s just what we are dealing with right now.
But there is at least one thing we can all do to help people get their mail on time. The more mail a mailman has to deliver, the higher the chances are that he will not get to all the homes on his route. So we need to cut down on the amount of mail we send and receive.
I can’t tell you what mail to send and what not to send, but it would be helpful to try to cut down as much as possible. Regarding incoming mail, everyone can help the mail move faster by opting out of mailing lists for credit cards offers, insurance offers, and catalogs. Taking yourself off these lists might also spare you a headache from companies trying to get your business!

That’s silly advice and won’t help. The mail carrier is not sorting your mail during their “allotted time” so receiving less mail won’t help.
And most of the junk mail people receive (especially here in Lakewood) are not from lists we can opt out of. In fact, it’s a mystery how we get on most of these lists… Many are the same that have people feeling free to call you at all hours of the day and night with automated messages.
My advice? (If you care) don’t do anything. That’ll force them to make the real changes they need to make. Like breaking the union and cutting the $120b a year they pay the pension
There is also the fact that they are thinking of downsizing which will make things worse. That is precisely because there isn’t enough mail If we sent more mail… it would help fund them and increase services. It would also give them stability and thereby make the mail carriers happier and more confident – which equals productivity.
If we cut down on mail then the postage price will go up!!
a better way to help is to not block mailboxes with cars or garbage cans because then the mailman has to stop and get out of the truck.
I thought of another thing that can possibly help.
Maybe all of us should try extra hard when we park our vehicles, to keep a nice distance from the mail box in order for the mailman to have a nice smooth easy route. This is a wonderful opportunity how we can help other people besides ourselves.
You can help by writing the president, and your electeds in DC and ask them to stop the cutbacks in the Postal Service. Use your Yiddishe Kop, do you think Bezos or any other private industry will deliver a letter for you cross country for less than $1?
This is the conclusion of a 30 year Republican plan to destroy the post office so that it can be privatized and contracted out to FedEx and UPS. Their goal was to make the post office seem incompetent by cutting services and funds. They first cut the funds under George W. Bush when they forced the USPS to fully fund the pension and the health insurance for 70 years in the future which costs billions of dollars a year. Now, Trump is finalizing the cutting it services aspect.
If that happens then we can all expect our mail to be even slower and it will cost about $30 to mail a letter and hundreds to mail packages. The only reason that FedEx and UPS don’t charge more is because the USPS is keeping them in check via competition.
