  1. Literally unfathomable. Rabbi Berkovitz was (I can’t believe I’m using the word “was”) from the most inspiring, caring, talented, innovative, warm and effective mechanchim out there from his very beginning as the 4th grade Rebbi in Mosdos Ohr Hatorah in Cleveland through his tenure as menahel in that mosad (which he took over from his very close yedid R’ Avrohom Fishman zt”l) through his current position in Passaic. Klal yisroel’s children בפרט lost a real diamond. What a klap. יהא זכרו ברוך.

    • And the yahrtzeit of R’ Avraham Fishman Zt”l is I believe on erev Tisha B’Av. Who could ever forget R’ Avrohom Fishman Zt”l and what he did for Cleveland Ohio and in the later years for Detroit Michigan….. Yehi Zichrom Boruch!

  3. We lost a giant. Humble and great at the same time. His warmth toward another yid was unparalleled. Always greeted everyone with a smile no matter from what walk of life they were from.
His trademark smile/smirk is something I will never forget. A semmal of עבדו את ה׳ בשמחה.
    A ruv, A rebbei , A father and a friend to all..
Uncle shmilu you will always be a symbol of what we are trying to become.
    With tears, A grieving Nephew.

  4. So sad to hear. Rabbi Berkowits was a rarity. A real person and a rabbi like no other! He has helped people in so many ways but like someone else said his smile and his mannerisms were so kind.
From the comments it is clear what a great person we have lost.

  5. Baruch Dayan Ha’emes. We are all grieving, crying, what a great big loss. My children are crying too. He loved and was loved by all. He especially loved children and they felt his warmth. In yeshiva, camp, and shul. yzb. May Hashem be menacheim all of us

  6. חבל על דאבדין אבל דלא משתכחין
Shmilu was a צדיק בן צדיק
His father הרב ר׳ יעקב זצ”ל was my favourite מלמד in Toronto. He came to us from Quito, Ecuador having lived there after WWII .
Shmilu was a copy of his father a walking “Kiddush Hashem”
May “Rav Shmuel Tzvi Zt”l be a מליץ יושר for his Entire family and for all of כלל ישראל
    He will be sorely missed
