Governor Murphy announced a “game changer” in New Jersey’s fight against coronavirus, saying he had secured 2.6 million rapid Covid-19 tests from the federal government.
The rapid tests, called BinaxNOW and manufactured by Abbott Labs, provide results in just 15 minutes, compared to an average turnaround time of 2-5 days for regular tests.
Governor Murphy said he sees the new tests being especially useful in schools and health care settings.
“You can envision it being a big weapon in schools, in school settings,” Murphy said. [It can be a] big weapon in augmenting our already ongoing efforts with healthcare workers and the vulnerable population.”
The rapid tests can also play an instrumental role in keeping Lakewood from being placed under another lockdown, as the town struggles to contain a recent outbreak of new cases.
Murphy said that the state expects to receive the first 170,000 of the rapid tests within the next two weeks.
CHEMED began administering rapid Covid-19 tests under provider recommendation again on Sunday, erev Yom Kippur.
from what I heard from health professionals the accuracy is questionable
I looked into this – positives are about 97% accurate, negatives are less accurate. But this is supposed to a first step. After getting the result, you are supposed to get retested. The point of a rapid is, if positive, you can reach out to contacts quicker, so the spread is contained better..
