New Jersey State Police Announces Enhancement to Firearms Application and Registration System

The New Jersey State Police announced today enhancements to the Firearms Application and Registration System (FARS), which further streamlines the paperless process to purchase a handgun. Beginning Thursday, October 1, this new enhancement to the FARS application process will make the Electronic Handgun Purchase to Permit (E-Permits) to purchase a handgun available immediately upon approval and provide electronic viewable access to available permits at licensed retail firearms dealers.

In 2016, Attorney General directive 2016-4 mandated uniform statewide practices and procedures for all firearm applications processes. In 2017, development began on the Firearms Application and Registration System (FARS), which was launched statewide in February 2019, streamlining the firearms application process for all municipalities across the state. The system allows residents of the state to submit online applications for firearms purchaser identification cards and handgun purchase permits.

The New Jersey State Police Firearms Investigation Unit and Information and Technology Section, along with outside vendors, spent years of research and development to launch (E-Permit). The enhancements will keep records on file electronically and allow police departments and licensed firearms dealers access to the database while enabling residents to conveniently acquire purchase permits online.

  1. It’s about time , I’ve been waiting 4 months for my purchasers permit, thank you Jackson for all the Infringements the constitution greatly appreciates it

    • The state has an online website for applications, but you first have to get the municipal code from the local PD to enter into the application. Don’t expect anything quickly even with the new “streamlined process”.

You have to get 2 references, make an appointment for fingerprinting, wait for a background check, then wait for the local PD to process it.

By state law, the local PD has to process the application within 30 days of when the background check is completed, but every step of the process is backed up right now. then once you get a permit, good luck finding a gun, and if you do find one that is NJ compliant, good luck finding ammunition.

This is what happens when people lose faith in the judicial system.

  2. I don’t know if there’s anything I can do about this so if anyone has any ideas please let me know. I submitted a firearms purchaser application in the beginning of January. I completed it did the fingerprinting and was told I would hear back from them within 3 to 6 weeks. I still have not heard back from them and they have not answered any of my calls or messages. I know due to Covid-19 everything got delayed but I think 9 months is a bit too much even for that.

  3. FYI this appears to be only for handgun permits, not the initial firearms ID.
A local gunstore told me they still (9/30) have no idea how it works yet
