Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away over Rosh Hashana from pancreatic cancer at the age of 87.
Ginsburg, a Jewish feminist who was nominated to the Court by President Bill Clinton in 1993, quickly became a progressive fixture on the Supreme Court, where she served for 27 years.
A political battle has already broken out over whether President Trump should be allowed to nominate a judge to the court before the presidential election takes place. In 2016, Republicans blocked Obama’s nominee (Merrick Garland) to replace Antonin Scalia on the court, saying voters in the presidential election should have a say first. After President Trump won the 2016 election, he nominated Neil Gorsuch to the court, who was later confirmed by the Republican-led Senate.
President Trump has pledged to nominate a woman to the Court, with most seeing Judge Amy Coney Barrett as the leading contender for the seat.
BD”E. Now let’s get a conservative nominated and confirmed asap. The 2016 situation was different in 2 ways, one it was a lame duck president and the Senate was controlled by the opposition, which is not the case now.
TheConsultant,
In 2016, Scalia died in February, 9 months before the election. So while Obama was a lame duck, we still had nine months before the election.
More importantly, three Republicans controlled the Senate and under advise and consent, they were under no law to advise. They could have begun the process with the nominee and simply not confirm them. Of course with the linguini spined Republicans, that was not a guarantee which is why McConnell didn’t even bring it up.
Not sure why youre agreeing that Obama was a lame duck. Lame duck is only after the election, not 9 months before.
BD”E.
Another Yiddishe Neshama.
When you read some of her bio’s now you’ll see she was a brilliant woman who fought tenaciously for justice and what she thought was right.
Can you imagine what she could’ve achieved had she had a Bais Yaakov education ??
Nebech.
To # 4. I think your comment about justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg A”H not receiving a Bet Yakov education is So So Sad. Maybe Ms. Ginsburg would not have accomplished what she did had she received such an education. Maybe a Bet Yakov education would have discouraged Ms. Ginsburg from pursuing the career she did. Have a meaningful Elul season & a mazeldig 5781 year. Hashem should protect us all.
To comment number 4.
