ICYMI – DON’T THROW OUT THAT BALLOT: Clarifying The Voting Process In The Upcoming Election

There has been much confusion regarding how to vote in the upcoming election, with many assuming they can simply vote as they usually do at their regular polling locations. This is not the case.

Governor Murphy announced in August that New Jersey will be conducting a mostly mail-in election this year due to concerns over the transmission of Covid-19 at polling places. The state sent mail-in ballots to all registered voters in New Jersey and expect everyone to vote that way if they are able to.

What if you don’t vote by mail? Well, it will be a lot more difficult for you to vote at all. There will be fewer in-person voting locations open in Lakewood on Election Day itself – leading to very long lines – and you will not be casting a vote by machine unless you have a disability. Instead, you will fill out a provisional paper ballot, and your vote will only be counted after all mail-in votes are counted and your eligibility is confirmed by the state.

In other words, it will likely be a tremendous pain in the neck to try voting in person on Election Day.

What if you thought you would be able to vote in person and threw out the ballot mailed to you? Request another one from the Ocean County clerk as soon as possible. You can contact the Ocean County Clerk’s Office by calling 732-288-7645.

If you are voting by mail, fill out the Vote by Mail Ballot you receive and return it:

  • to the Board of Elections via USPS
  • in-person to the Board of Elections
  • in person at your polling place on Election Day
  • drop your ballot in a secure ballot drop box – see locations
  • In addition, a limited number of polling places will be available on Election Day where you may cast a paper provisional ballot. Only disabled voters may cast a ballot on a voting machine.

Postage will be paid to return your ballot.
All Vote by Mail Ballots must be returned no later than 8 PM on November 3rd, Election Day.

  1. If there is no in-line voting, does that mean that Election Day is not a legal municipal holiday? I don’t see why we taxpayers should pay for a holiday when no voting is taking place.

  2. I just went to the Voter Information Portal at nj.gov. There are 11 locations available around lakewood. When usually go there is almost no one there. Why are we being shoehorned into voting by mail?

  3. if we vote by mail, there is room for mishandling and corruption. Paper ballots cannot be tracked and can be thrown out if the one handling it does not like the picked candidate. Some people do not have morals. Not all. But there is high risk of fraud with paper ballots. And even if online claims your ballot was received and counted, its possible the person can count your vote as any candidate they choose and not record your vote the way you voted. Not that it WILL happen, but there is a much bigger possibility. And this election should be as honest as possible no matter the outcome.

    • Ballots are counted via a scanner, to ensure accuracy. At least two people, of different political parties, must be present whenever a ballot is handled in any way. At other times, ballots are kept in a locked room.

  4. The problem is not the mail in, BUT who got the mailed ballots. Anyone that ever registered to vote is on the active voter mailing list. The only way to get off the voter rolls is to send a certified letter to the Board of Elections requesting removal. So that means that if you moved or died they will send a ballot to your last address. This is where voter fraud comes in. What if someone fills out your old ballot and votes? The Election Board may catch it and void all ballots with your name on it. That mean you don’t get to vote.

  5. My neighbor got two mail in ballots on her name . I’m sure she’s not the only one . Like mentioned before, what stops someone from sending out both ballots or simply sending out ballots that you received from the previous person that lived in your apartment? This is a complete joke.

    • With every ballot, a voter must fill out a certificate, which includes name, address and signature. Every signature on the certificate is compared with the signature on file.
It is a felony to forge another persons signature on the ballot, and it is easily detected.

      • My signature has evolved over the years and it looks nothing like the signature I signed 20 years ago when I first registered to vote. every election when I vote in person the person helping at the table never compares my signatures. At the past primary the accepted my mail in ballot even though my signature isn’t exactly the same.
and I hope they accept my ballot now as well.
This “forced” mail in ballots is just another fraud of our Democratic Governor.

        • The Board of Election looks at your signature history, including your latest signature, so they can see if a signature evolved over time. If they decide it is a mismatch, you will be notified so you can “cure” the mismatch by providing identification.

  6. I just spoke to several people who got mail in ballots from both NY and NJ. They voted in NY 20 years ago . So this whole thing is just rife with fraud.

    • Forget this year.. my father tells me when he votes in NY he still sees my name on the same page… 22 years after I moved to NJ and registered to vote here. I could easily vote in both places…. not that I ever entertained the thought. The DMV asks if you have a license in another state and it gets cancelled… why are not doing the same when you register vote. Just ask if you are registered elsewhere and have a system to then automatically notify the last place to remove the previous registration.

  7. you just need to mail in your ballet and do your part. It’s up to Hashem and not anyone, honest or not, to decide who will win this election.

  8. why are there fewer voting places? there should be more voting places! to keep the lines and crowds smaller. I already threw out my mail ,thinking i would vote in person, and many people i spoke to, did the same

  9. At the end of the day, the total number of ballots that had mistakes or duplicates are so miniscule, it won’t affect the election.
Yes mistakes and even fraud happens. But it’s not as big a deal as everyone is making it out to be.
If you won’t vote because you’re scared of fraud, that will be a much larger number of people not voting.

    • How much of the fraud do you think actually gets caught?? The few losers who made obvious mistakes. There are organized rings of professional fraudsters who know how to cover their tracks. Those are the ones providing thousands of extra Dem votes.

That said, drop your vote off 24/7 in one of the secure boxes. They are placed at building entrances so they are covered by the cameras.

I noticed one on 4th bet Clifton & Lexington

    • Provisional ballots will be counted even more easily than replacement ones by mail. Don’t be duped! If you threw out your ballot you CAN vote in person, and the vote WILL BE COUNTED!

  10. Just letting everyone know that I mistakenly threw out my ballot and went to the Toms River library and easily got a new ballot and dropped it into the box right outside the library. There were no lines at all and no waiting.

    • If you still have your mail in ballot. fill it out (instructions included inside) and A) drop it off in the secure ballot box by the O.C. northern resource center on 4th between Clifton and Lexington. or B) Drop it in the mail box and it will be mailed to the county election office.

If you lost you ballot, you will need to go to 101 Washington St in Toms river between 8am and 8 pm. you will need a drivers license with current address (and a mask)

  11. i got a letter in the mail, after i read it 3 times i think it was trying to say that there will be only a few in person voting places, and they are for people with disabilities .What?? for disabilities? those people should be voting from home! and the young healthy ones should be going out to vote, im all confused with this state!
