Lakewood Fire Chiefs Installed In Ceremony [PHOTOS]

The Lakewood Fire Department on Monday held a ceremony installing their chiefs, Fire Chief Jonathan Yahr, Deputy Chief Steve Mulholland, and Battalion Chief David Wolf. They will each assume the duties of their respective posts on November 1st.

Chief Yahr took over the position from Chief Mike D’Elia, who held the position of Assistant Chief and then Fire Chief for the past 8 years.

The ceremony began with a welcome address from Jersey City Battalion Chief Rich Gorman, followed by the National Anthem and a moment of silence honoring falled firefighters and survivors. R’ Moshe Rotberg then gave a benediction, followed by Amazing Grace performed by Shamrock & Thistles Pipes and Drums. The chiefs were then sworn in, followed by a Proclamation honoring outgoing Chief D’Elia by the Board of Fire Commissioners. The event concluded with remarks delivered by former Chief D’Elia and Rich Gorman.

Deputy Fire Chief Steven Mulholland said he was honored to have received his promotion.

“I am honored that the firefighters and citizens of Lakewood believe in me and my abilities to help lead this great department into the future,” Mulholland told TLS. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank my family for always believing in me and supporting me through this incredible journey.”

Battalion Chief David Wolf told TLS that he is excited to begin serving the Lakewood community in his new position.

“I’m honored and humbled for the promotion, and I look forward to serving the department and the Lakewood community,” Wolf said.

Outgoing Chief D’Elia told TLS he was grateful for the time he served at the helm of the Lakewood Fire Department.

“The past 8 years have been challenging times, but we have seen the growth of our training program, advancements in information technology, and the reorganization of the department,” D’Elia said. “I have asked a lot from some of the most dedicated members and they have not let me down. It’s been a privilege to help reshape and lead such a fine and historic fire department.”

On incoming Chief Yahr, D’Elia said he was confident the department is in good hands.

“I have personally known Captain Yahr since we were freshmen in high school, and we went on to serve together as firefighters. The LFD is in capable hands with the promotion of Captain Yahr. He is a consummate professional with the experience and knowledge the department needs at this time.

“I would wish the best to Deputy Chief Mulholland and Battalion Chief Wolf on their promotions. I would like to thank Engine Company No. 1, Rescue Company No. 2, Junior Hose Company No. 3, and Reliance Hose Company No. 4 for the solid work you do every day for your community. I would also like to thank the Fire Commissioners and Fire Administrators, both past and present, for their endless support of me for the last 8 years, but most notably for the last 4.

“To the residents of Lakewood: it was an absolute honor and pleasure to serve you,” D’Elia concluded.
