Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Multiple Traffic Issues

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mayor,

Thank you for your wonderful work on behalf of the town!

Is there a way to put a left turning lane at the Cedarbridge and Clover intersection?

There is not enough time for the cars to turn left because of oncoming traffic and this causes all the cars in the left lane to try and merge to the right, which causes a lot of unnecessary morning traffic.

There seems to be a lot of room to open this area and this would decrease the traffic immensely.

Thank you!

Response from Mayor Coles:

I will ask the county engineer to see if they can move this project up or do something temporary to make life a little easier on everyone.

Thanks

Ray

Question:

Would it be possible to extend the light at NH and pine for the point street side on sun morning? Please. The cars back up past Albert.
Thanks
Response from Mayor Coles:

Thanks. We have asked the county to adjust the timing.

Question:

Dear Mayor,

There are so many needs that you have taken care of or are tending to for Lakewood. If you can, it would be a big service to the people in the area of New Central and Gudz and drivers who pass through there to do something to prevent accidents. There are several big accidents every year there and there must be countless minor accidents. Anyone who wants can pass by and see the evidence from the fence at that corner which keeps getting hit and damaged. Often you can find debris that remained after an accident. It is also a big danger for pedestrians.

Is there anything in the works to resolve this? It seems to be that a traffic circle can take care of the issue. I’m wondering if that is a consideration.

Thank you very much,

A grateful Lakewood resident

(Thank you Lakewood Scoop for providing this platform to communicate with the mayor)

Answer from Mayor Coles:

Good afternoon,

I don’t know that a traffic circle would be feasible. I will ask Traffic & Safety to look at the area and suggest some potential fixes.

Question:

Good morning Mayor Coles,

I have a son who goes to Lakewood LECC Campus 3 on Ridge Road.

It is a long stretch of road from intersection East 7th Street/Brook Rd/ Ridge Ave to Somerset Ave along Ridge Ave. Cars zoom by at high speeds.
The security guard at this campus advised me not to park my car across the road when I come and pick up my son but to rather park on the same side as the school because its too dangerous to cross this road, especially with a kid in hand. He said that cars fly down this road and it’s really dangerous.

Is it possible to have speed bumps placed along this stretch of road to avoid the high speed traffic?

Thanks so much.
Be well.

Answer from Mayor Coles:

Good morning:

I will ask Traffic & Safety to look into this. I know our First Responders feel speed bumps are hazardous when they are responding to emergencies, but I don’t want to rule anything out when it comes to the safety of our residents.

Thanks for letting me know about this concern.

Question:

Dear Mayor,

Thank you for all your hard work!
Can another left turning lane be added from Avenue of the States onto Cedarbridge? I work in the area and it takes 4 lights to just get to make the turn! It will be longer soon as the buildings are getting put up in the area. Another lane would alleviate much of the traffic as more cars can make it through the light.

As well, Cedarbridge and Clover a left turn lane would definitely help the traffic flow. I have seen quite few accidents because of the congestion and cars are trying to push themselves in.

Please see what can be done with both situations as I and so many other residents find going to and back to work very stressful.

Answer from Mayor Coles:

Good morning

We did some checking & the applicant constructing the strip mall will be installing an additional turn lane as part of their approval. If all goes well it may be constructed in the spring.

Question:

I drive North-bound on Albert in the morning, making a right onto Pine.

This street always gets very backed up during the rush hours and I was wondering if the street can get striped with turning lanes like they did recently for Washington onto Pine?

I know Albert is a narrower street but possibly they can at least remove the curb that sticks out on the right side past the stop sign which prevents the cars from splitting into 2 lanes at the end (for left and right turning vehicles)?

Thank you!

Answer from Mayor Coles:

I will ask the engineers and Traffic and Safety to take a look and see what we can do.

Thanks

Ray

  1. This is the first time I see that the Mayor answered multiple questions (6) in one posting. I hope it will continue like this. I am sure he gets many suggestions and this way the public can see questions and read his answers in one week instead of having to wait six weeks to see six questions and answers!

I find this column to be the best one of all the columns.

    Keep up the good work!

  2. Mayor Coles- you are fantastic! You don’t just SAY you’ll look into the issues we bring up here, you actually DO! I was so impressed on Thursday when someone mentioned we should reinstall a sign by Chestnut and New Hampshire, you said you’ll take care of and by mid afternoon it was already there! Way to go!

  3. Prospect and Cross! the traffic on these two streets in the morning and afternoon is terrible and gets worse every year. Prospect can be backed up from Cross, all the way to route 9! bumper to bumper. Can Mayor Coles please do something to help? thanks for all your hard work

  4. When will light finally be installed and working at intersection of 14th St and Hope Chapel Rd. About 1-2 weeks ago , all other work (besides actual putting of functional traffic light) was completed. When will?that happen. Long overdue. Very dangerous! Lights long overdue. Please supply timeline and WHY taking so long.

  5. Does the Mayor see the comments section? If not, please submit your traffic request directly. These traffic suggestions are crucial to have a smooth and safe driving experience.
