NJSP Beefs Up Patrol Ahead of New Year Holiday

NJSP: This past year, we have faced unprecedented challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and as everyone is eager to say goodbye to 2020 and enter the new year on a positive note, so is the New Jersey State Police, which is why we are aiming for back-to-back years of zero traffic fatalities for the New Year holiday period.

During the holiday period last year, there were zero fatal crashes in New Jersey. We are asking everyone to help us keep it that way for the new year. If you plan on drinking alcohol during the holiday, don’t make a bad decision by getting behind the wheel. Tragedies can be avoided by calling a taxi, using transportation applications such as Uber and Lyft, having a designated driver, or making plans to stay where you are.

In addition to regularly scheduled patrols, the New Jersey State Police will have an additional 24 troopers on patrol statewide. Troopers will focus on violations such as speeding, aggressive driving, improper cell phone use, seatbelt usage, fatigued driving, and DWI.

“We know that our public safety mission greatly relies on our partnerships with those we serve, and last year we demonstrated just how powerful our collective efforts can be in more ways than one, including entering the new year with zero traffic fatalities,” said Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. “We will do our part by having additional troopers on patrol to keep our roadways safe, but we cannot do it alone. Please help us by making the responsible choice of not getting behind the wheel after drinking. On behalf of the New Jersey State Police, I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy New Year.”

The New Year holiday period begins at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 31, and ends at 5:59 a.m. on Monday, January 4.
