Lakewood Police Chief Greg Meyer reflects on the life and murder of Ptl. Chris Matlosz

10 years ago, on a cold winter day, Patrolman Christopher Matlosz began his new shift on Platoon 3, evenings from 2pm to midnight.

Shortly after briefing he went and began his patrolling the streets, what he loved to do.

Around 4pm, he approached an individual who turned and fired upon him before he could get out of his patrol car, shooting him 3 times, 2 which were that of an execution.

The suspect fled the area, and with help, made it to Camden where he would be arrested less than two days later. An intense manhunt was underway with police receiving hundreds of tips and leads in this case.

Due to the cooperation of the residents and public, Chris’ murderer was brought to trial and will never step foot out of a jail cell for the rest of his life, living in a cage like the animal he is.

Chris was the life of the party – wherever he was, there was sure to be laughter.

He was engaged to be married and had just bought a home that he was filling with love and memories.

We will always remember Chris and his big smile, sense of humor, practical joker that he was, also a loyal co-worker, friend, fiancé, brother and son. We remember him at concerts, weddings, funerals, work, and whenever we hear ‘chicken fried’, his favorite song, or at a concert, beach or bar.

We will now, as we always have done in the past 10 years, celebrate his life, legacy and we will never forget Officer Christopher Matlosz #317, one of Lakewood Police Department’s finest.

His friend,

Chief Gregory Meyer
