Lakewood’s Congressman Rep. Chris Smith Deactivates Twitter Account [UPDATE]

UPDATE 8:23 PM In a statement, Rep. Smith’s office said that he “halted his Twitter account over security concerns and to help the district and Nation move toward unity during this difficult time. Divisive and hate-filled Tweets have become far too frequent and impede the healing so needed today. Congressman Smith continues to receive phone calls and emails from thousands of constituents freely expressing their opinions. His website and Instagram continue to provide congressman’s most recent statements on votes and legislation.”

Rep. Chris Smith (NJ-4) apparently deactivated his Twitter account late Friday but has yet to make any public comments or distribute a press release explaining the decision.

There are at least two distinct possibilities as to why Lakewood’s elected official in the US House of Representatives made the decision to cut off his account: 1) he was doing it in solidarity with President Trump, whose Twitter account was permanently suspended just a week earlier, or 2) he was receiving online hate and possibly even threats for his refusal to vote to impeach Trump when Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats voted to do so on Wednesday.

A third, more likely possibility, is that Smith, who never had a large online presence and who had not tweeted from the account in months, simply decided to shut it down because it had little use for him.

  1. Awesome. if everyone would follow this would truly be a great day. That is leadership my friends. Lets try to cut their stock price to $30 to start. Deactivate your account as well.

  2. Smart move. When you have a Twitter account you are ” forced ” to respond to every controversy. Rep Smith gets things done without being distracted by all the chatter online by congresspeople who just tweet and do nothing i.e. AOC וחבריה

  3. Of your choices, 1, 2, or 3, it would seem that 3 is not the right answer. There’s no harm in him having a Twitter account.

So the answer is either one or two. As far as the hate mail and email he was getting, what a shame that all these people didn’t see that the FBI said it had nothing to do with President Trump. It was planned out long before!

  4. Someone needs to deactivate the activists – namely, the Left Wing activists and looters. Additionally, there should be a mandate that anyone who purchases a pack of matches or a lighter be required to show his/her voter registration card to validate that they are not Democrats, who might be Left-Wing activists who could then use the matches/lighters to burn down businesses.
