New Jersey Gun Applications Soar In 2020

The New Jersey State Police say they received 442,214 applications for gun permits in 2020, a 332% increase from 2019 when 102,270 applications were submitted.

Applications to purchase handguns have soared in New Jersey and across the nation as people for their safety with unrest roiling the nation. 2020 had no dearth of troubling incidents and events that sent people streaming to obtain firearms, including the coronavirus pandemic, racial unrest and protests over the course of the summer, and the more recent turmoil surrounding the presidential election.

Lakewood Police Chief Greg Meyer told TLS that while it is a Constitutional right to obtain a firearm, carriers must be aware of the awesome responsibility that comes along with owning a handgun.

“It is imperative that every gun owner learn how to properly use it, be well-versed in the laws pertaining to gun ownership, and be trained in how to properly protect themselves and their families. While it is a Constitutional right to own a firearm, owners must obey the laws,” Chief Meyer said. “And rest assured that the police department stands at the ready to enforce all laws, ensure people’s personal safety, and to protect life and liberty.”

The exponential rise in gun permit applications in New Jersey can also be partially attributed to the recent rollout of online applications in New Jersey, which streamlined the process.

  1. I typically shoot down rumors when I hear them, as they tend to trigger a sense of skepticism in me, but apparently the rise in gun applications is not a rumor that can just be shot down at whim; it has been confirmed.

  2. Last week I bought two of my sons AR-15s. My oldest son (in Bergenfield) got a Ruger AR-556; another son (in Far Rockaway and who is NYPD) got a Smith & Wesson M&P-15 and a Dickinson XX3-D shotgun (these are in addition to his two service weapons). (And yes, there are frum Jews in the NYPD).

If people haven’t picked up a copy of R’ Sorotzkin’s just released sefer — “The End Illiminated” — they should. Expect a very fascinating (albeit frightening) explanation of how our troubled times (the “end of days” in this American galus) appear to be a fulfillment of the words of Chazal.

This is NOT a time for us Jews in chutz l’Aretz to be complacent, and repeat the terrible mistake of German Jews in 1933, who soothed themselves with the delusional “this too shall pass,” as “civilized” Germany transformed into a hate-mongering fascist dictatorship. Before our very eyes, we are (Rachmana Litzlan) seeing the same thing happening here in our goldene medinah, as it descends into outright insanity.
