To My Dear Lakewood Community,

Many of you don’t know this but a year and a half ago, I went through a bit of a medical journey myself. I spent many weeks in the hospital and many more weeks bedridden. Getting an exact diagnosis was challenging and my colleagues came through in a way that was astounding. They insisted on accompanying me throughout the entire ordeal, speaking with my doctors and researching extensively on my behalf. Baruch Hashem what I had wasn’t cancer, but the process was enlightening and I often think to myself that perhaps I had to go through that so I can better understand a fraction of an iota of what a cancer patient may go through.

I recall one of the doctors visiting me in the hospital room after he had a conversation with my colleague. He asked, ‘Which medical school did Mr. Lowy go to?’ I didn’t want to tell him that his highest level of education was Yeshiva.

There’s an often-shocking level of medical intelligence, guidance and expertise that emerges from the mere passion and commitment to the cholei yisroel- that can be acquired despite the lack of medical education.

Cancer didn’t pause for Covid.

It’s been a wild year and the majority of us don’t want to hear another word about Covid, preferring for it to be a thing of the past. Life was put on hold, normalcy evaporated, and each day was a new adjustment.  Yet, for a cancer patient this wasn’t new. Cancer continued its work, undeterred. Covid only increased the challenge. It was indiscriminatory of those already battling other conditions.
In the RCCS offices, the increase of requests for financial aid coupled by the complexity of arranging health care in this difficult climate, the race to meet all those needs was overwhelming. And yet, they were met, and be’ezras Hashem will continue being met. How?!

We look back at the last year and we are in awe of the unfathomable amount of chesed coming from Lakewood. Through enormous acts of giving in this town alone, multiple tzedaka institutions were supported with tens of millions of dollars raised in local campaigns, countless acts of chesed, and the generosity of the community’s time and energy.

Lakewood shone through the tragic times we’ve experienced and stood by each other’s side while grappling through the dark and unknown.

This year, with the increase of patients l”a and the subsequent increase in our budget, we reach out to the Lakewood community once again.

Our patients need us 12 months a year. Insurance premiums get paid monthly.

Every single donation we receive is significant and deeply appreciated. As we are an organization that services its patients on a month-to-month basis, having individuals commit to contributing on a month-to-month basis as well, allows us to keep distributing the hundreds of thousands of dollars a month more effectively. At the same time that your card is getting swiped, insurance premium checks are being written.

You’re the supporter, we are the facilitators.

As a nation that excels at being noseh be’ol, we’re also individuals who have our personal responsibilities. We each have our monthly tuition, car, and grocery bills, imagine we added to that yenem’s health insurance! Hashem is seeing His children, each month, feeling the pinch for their brothers pain – pain that was never intended for others to feel and that alone, may prompt a change of gezeira iy”H.

Who am I to proclaim yeshuos, but it does say כל המרחם על הבריות, מרחמים עליו מן השמים

Perhaps we can conclude that by sponsoring a policy for patients of RCCS, one is purchasing “assurance” for רחמי שמים.
