JUST IN: Gov Murphy Rolls Out Sweeping Gun Control Package

Saying that “New Jersey has a gun crime problem,” Governor Phil Murphy on Thursday morning announced a legislative package of gun control reform laws, in what he described as “perhaps the most sweeping gun violence prevention package in the country.”

Some of the package’s provisions include: increasing the minimum age for buying a long gun to 21; requiring firearm safety training before getting a permit to purchase a handgun; equipping guns with technology that would allow law enforcement to trace bullets to specific guns; banning the sale of .50 caliber guns; mandating the storing of guns inside lockboxes; electronic record-keeping of ammunition sold in the state; and closing a loophole that allows individuals who move to New Jersey from out-of-state to skirt the state’s gun procedures and requirements.

Governor Murphy also said that he would like to increase the accountability of gun manufacturers. Under current law, a gun manufacturer cannot be sued over a shooting carried out by someone who bought their guns.

The package would also give $10 million to boost gun violence intervention programs across the state and $2 million to the Gun Violence Research Center at Rutgers University, and would mandate shooting drills in schools.

“We are tired of funerals and memorials,” Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver said. “Growing up in Newark, I could go to any section of the city. Our young people can’t do that today.”

Governor Murphy was joined at the announcement in Newark by numerous Democratic allies, but no Republicans.

  1. So in short, nothing that would hinder would-be-criminals, just more headaches for law abiding gun owners…
Besides, micro-stamping technology does not exist and no gun company is investing in it, as it will just encourage states to require it, banning other firearms

  2. Funny.
After hearing how bad this legislation supposed to be from so many people, I eagerly read what was supposed to be a list of quack-laws.
Yet I found myself agreeing with every single law that was written here… strange that people dont like them. Really strange.

  3. Thoughtless. A .22 will kill you just as fast as .50 cal. You allow them to ban one caliber, what is stopping them from banning the rest? How many shootings occur with a .50 cal weapon? These rich politician have probably never heard of a Community gun while sitting high on their perches, usually illegally obtained or stolen, shared by many to commit horrific crimes. The “bad” people aren’t going through the lengthy process to obtain FID cards and permits. Don’t limit the legal, do something about the illegal. I can’t wait until this fraud and his administration, especially his A.G., get voted out this November. Im looking even more forward to the federal mid terms!

    • A car going 45 can also kill someone, so why make a speed limit at all? The answer is probability.
Oh, and people dont listen to speed limits either many times, and certainly not “reckless drivers”, with your logic that would mean we should abolish speed limits.

  4. These Democrats are insane!
Defund the Police take guns away from law abiding citizens, leaving the law abiding citizens defenseless.

Get the guns away from the criminals.

These Democrats should be held responsible for any crime committed with an illegal gun.

  5. The noda byehuda has a teshuva about guns. Its for goyim and esav. Jews have no place having guns or hunting

And frankly for us, gun control is a good thing. The only rational for more guns is so that we can protect ourselves against killers and shoot back at them. How many of us know how to shoot a gun let alone carry it? For us the safer thing is, fewer guns so that crazies like the one in jersey city or Monsey can’t kill us.

  6. Hey midnight, Jersey has had the worst pro gun laws for decades and where is the progress of making it harder for gun purchases lowering crime? These are only smoke and mirrors. Screw your speed limit, more people are killed by knives than guns. Just a handful of cities are responsible for over 50% of gun deaths mostly committed by minorities. These cities are loaded with democrats and are the ones getting the guns illegally. The criminal loves this (moderated). Murphy has to go.
