Lakewood officials today issued a strong warning after a brush fire which consumed over an acre of land.
At approximately 1:40 PM today, the Lakewood Fire Dept was dispatched to the area of Riverside Court for a reported brush fire.
“The fast-moving fire consumed 1 1/2 acres before it was contained,” Fire Chief John Yahr said.
Luckily, no homes were damaged, but the fire – driven by winds – required the assistance from the State Forest Fire Service.
“I remind everyone that during a fire weather warning outdoor burning is prohibited,” said Yahr. “Please ensure you educate your children on the dangers of fire.”
Over the weekend, the NWS has issued wildfire warnings.
The NWS stated, “Dry weather, sunshine, humidity levels between 20 and 35 percent and northwest winds occasionally gusting 25 to 35 mph is expected today across eastern New York, western Massachusetts and northwest Connecticut. All of these parameters suggested an elevated risk of fire spread, especially from late morning through the afternoon.”
Lakewood Police Chief Greg Meyer added, “It’s too dry and windy, and fires should not be lit for any reasons.”
