Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Intersection comments/suggestions

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Good afternoon, Mayor Coles.

Thank you for taking the time to read our questions and respond to each inquiry. We really appreciate it!

I have two questions for you.

1) re: turning lanes and turning signals at the Cedar Bridge and Oberlin intersection. This project was started long ago, but has been left hanging. Do you know what’s causing the delay and when it’ll be completed?

2) re: the Washington and Pine Street intersection. This area was recently repaved and painted, improving the traffic flow a bit. However, the traffic can still be exceedingly congested at times. Would it be possible to put in a 4 way stop sign there? This worked wonders at other intersections, and I’m thinking it may be very helpful here as well.

Thank you very much.

A Pine Street area resident

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

The Cedarbridge job has been held up due to the Pandemic as well as JCP&L’s schedule to move the poles & install new lights. I am hopeful it will be resolved in the next few weeks.

There are several projects in the works for the Washington – Pine Street intersection. We are hoping to get final approval for Vine Street shortly. Part of the job will be to reconfigure the intersections. One possibility is to have Washington curve to meet the new Vine Street. If not Washington would stay where it is, but we would probably want to put in a traffic light to control the intersections.

I will send your Stop Sign suggestion to Traffic & Safety to look at as an interim solution.

Thanks for reaching out.

Stay safe

Ray

  1. A 4 way stop sign with increase the congestion on pine street in both directions. It will only help for the Washington street turn onto Pine.

Perhaps a crossing guard during the busy 3-4 PM is a better idea.

  2. No 4 way stop signs, period. If 4 drivers approach the signs at the same time, each’ll think they have the right of way.

  3. Continuation of comment # 2: As it is, a % of drivers don’t even come to a full stop at a regular stop sign. And traffic lights? Shema Yisrael. May Bore’ Olam have rachmanut on the olim.
