Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Hope x County Line Road

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

To the Mayor:
Wow! it was nice to see my suggestion implemented at the Hope Chapel Rd/West County Line Rd intersection (see my prior email printed Nov 2019). However, it seems to be indirectly causing more traffic (!?) at times -right now is one of them. I believe that is stemming from the camera is looking at the right turning lane and seeing it empty thereby only letting 5-6 cars make the left onto County Line Road. It used to and should be allowing many more cars than that to turn on each green. That left turning lane out of Hope Chapel is backed up so far that traffic is crawling up to North Lake Drive!!! An adjustment is needed to the camera sensor looking at the traffic heading out of Hope Chapel Rd towards County Line Rd.

Thank you very much,

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

It is not unusual for timing adjustments to be made once a change like this is made. I will ask the county to look into it and make the necessary adjustments.

Thanks for reaching out.

Ray

  1. Dear Mayor Coles,

The road improvements on Squankum and the surrounding streets have improved the driving experience in this area considerably. Thank you for your hard work in serving the needs of Lakewood as best as you can.
I would like to suggest the repaving of 8th street from Monmouth Avenue to Clifton, at least. The road there is riddled with potholes and craters, which makes this logical route from Squankum to Forest a non-option for those who want their cars to remain in one piece. I believe that repaving this road would alleviate traffic in the surrounding area, especially during the busiest traffic hours.
Thank you again for being a true listener and doer to your constituents.
    A grateful resident of Lakewood

  2. Hello Mayor Coles,

I would strongly suggest that speed bumps be implemented on both Rt#70 and New Hampshire Rd. An elderly woman was behind me on New Hampshire and Oak and started honking her horn for me to turn on a red light. There is too much defensive driving in Lakewood plus we all need to slow down.

  3. Yes. There are more cars turning left now from westbound County Line Road onto southbound Hope Chapel Road due to Kent Road still being closed for a bridge replacement.
However: there is a left turn 10 times worse than that: Turning Left from eastbound Kennedy Blvd onto northbound Route 9 ; I usually have to wait for 4 or 5 green lights to turn left which consumes 8 to 13 minutes of my time.
Friday is my only day off of which I do all of my banking , shipping and shopping: 1st I go to Gourmet Glatt Plaza to : Lakewood Post, Chase, Center of Town, The Vineyard, Toys 4U. Than I get delayed 13 minutes with that left turn onto Route 9 to go to Howell: Target, Kohl’s/Amazon, Santander, QuickCheck gas, Staples, PNC, Walmart from behind Walmart I take that road straight into Jackson to start visiting my grandchildren of which I would have 15 minutes more time to spend with them if a left turn signal/arrow would be installed there.

  4. To Rush.
1)That elderly woman that was honking at you shouldn’t be driving anymore.
2)There’s not enough defensive driving in Lakewood.
