Pain at the Pump: NJ Gas Tax Expected to Increase Yet Again as Revenues Fall

The New Jersey gas tax is expected to be increased after revenues were shown to be down by about $5 million over the past year due to a major decrease in motorists due to Covid-19.

Under a law signed by Governor Chris Christie in 2016, New Jersey’s gas tax must be increased if certain revenue targets are not hit; the gas tax has soared ever since. The next increase will likely hike the gas tax rate by 1-1.5 cents per gallon, increasing the tax yet further from the current, already sky-high 50.7 cents per gallon. Just 5 years ago, the state’s gas tax was under 15 cents per gallon.

Revenue from collected tax on gas sales goes to the state’s Transportation Trust Fund, which is supposed to make capital improvements to New Jersey’s roads and highways.

The decision over whether to raise the gas tax won’t happen until state officials and an independent group review the tax revenue numbers, with the increase expected to go into effect on October 1st.

According to AAA,  the average price for a gallon of gasoline in New Jersey as of Sunday is $3.202. New Jersey also has the fourth-highest gas tax rate in the nation, according to the Tax Foundation, behind just California, Illinois, and Pennsylvania.

  1. Never believe it when a progressive say the rich must pay their fair share. Why did Biden waive US sanctions on Russian pipelines and close our own? Where is Robert Mueller to investigate Russian collusion?

  2. The so called president killed the USA fuel pipelines and put us back to being beholden to the Arabs. Using the Federal Reserve and Central Bank as a cookie jar will cause all other prices to continue to rise.

  3. Miss Trump yet!
Maybe if they lower the prices more people will fill up more often by bigger cars trucks and SUVs and that will drive up the revenue. Higher prices will just make people fill and drive less often.

    • It’s a lot worse than that since the government is forcing car manufactures to get better & better fuel economy, & convincing people to go electric with tax credits… the usage is going down down down

  4. As if the liberals in Trenton do not realize that the ones being hurt the most with raised gasoline taxes are the poorest. Not only does each dime mean to them more than to wealthier people, but they are the ones who MUST travel to work. Those with better education and higher positions have learned how to work from home, over the pandemic, while menial and other physical jobs still have to be done in person, obviously.
So, let’s tax you more, and then send you a small check, so that you will remain eternally grateful to the Democrats in charge, because they, supposedly, really care about you and your needs. Right.

  5. Keep it up New Jersey. Keep killing yourself over and over and over!

It’s about the same price in New Jersey as it is in most of surrounding states. There is no more reason whatsoever to wait until you get to New Jersey to fill up. All these drivers who used to fill up in New Jersey to take advantage of the lower prices, hence increased revenue for New Jersey, are now not doing that. I drive a lot for a living. Gas prices in the Hudson Valley are CHEAPER, CHEAPER, than New Jersey! I no longer have a reason to wait till I get home to fill up in New Jersey in order to save $0.30 a gallon or more. I could fill up in the Hudson Valley, and save myself $0.15 a gallon or so!

When will these morons in Trenton realize That they are messing themselves up with this. They could keep raising the gas tax and people will not fill up in New Jersey. What a novel concept!

Granted of course you have the fools in Lakewood who keep using those two RIPOFF gas stations diagonally across from each other on Madison and County Line, when they can drive not even 1/10th of the mile into Howell and have gas prices that are way cheaper! What can you do, people like to pay an extra $0.40 a gallon for no reason! They have Pop’s or the Shver’s credit card so it’s not their money.

  6. Even if you can argue that trump was better then Biden in regards to gasoline prices, there’s no question the Biden is taking covid more seriously. And I hope everyone would agree that lives are more important than gas prices.

  7. We probably have Governor Murphy to thank for raising the gas tax. Until he was governor we didn’t have a tax raise and now is the third time in just a few years that the tax is going up again.

  8. Maybe when Governor knucklehead gets back from his vacation in Italy he will feel pity on us working class and delay the tax for 6 months.

I doubt it he only cares about getting re elected not about the working class.

Remember in November. Lets show him how inefficient the State unemployment is.
