Question:
As a resident that lives in the area of Chestnut and New Hampshire I need to make a left turn from Chestnut onto New Hampshire quiet often and it’s a hard and long left turn to make.
Even when it’s red at RT 70 Cars coming from oak are just trying to get until the light to wait there instead of waiting before Chestnut, and by the time all cars passed to get until the light and cars coming from RT 70 that wanna go left onto chestnut are done, there is no chance for cars coming from Chestnut to make a left.
My suggestion is to add a traffic light corner Chestnut and New Hampshire that works along with the RT 70 light so that when it’s red at RT 70 Cars will wait at chestnut and let the cars from Chestnut and RT 70 do their left turns.
See attached.
Thank you!
Response from Mayor Coles:
The entire intersection has been redesigned to add a light at Chestnut, as well as other realignments to improve traffic flow in general. Right now it is in the hands of the county and state, since Rt 70 is a state Highway. I will reach out and see if we can get an estimate for construction.

Simple solution for the time being. Put a traffic sign at the New Hampshire south bound side “Stop Here when Red”.
As was presented in the Scoop a short time ago (Nov 22, 2019)– A light will be installed at Chestnut for cars coming out of Chestnut. Going northbound cars will NOT make left onto Chestnut, they will have to make a right and take the jug handle onto Rt70. Then go west on Rt70 and make a right just after the Rt70 & New Hampshire intersection. That jug handle will be modified to exit onto Chestnut where you will be able to go left or right. See the image. Enlarge the image to see the “Straight ahead” arrows on northbound New Hampshire. Sorry but Scoop will not allow me to post the URL of the image nor the page the article is on. Search Scoop for “Chestnut New Hampshire” and Nov 22, 2019 date. Then click on the intersection image to enlarge it.
How will this effect the vehicles who are currently attempting a left from New Hampshire into the school? There are clearly marked No Left Turn signs. This causes more frustration in the morning and afternoon during the school open and end times. People in the left lane on New Hampshire then attempt to cut over to the right lane in order to still make the green light.
This is a hot mess.
