OUTRAGEOUS: UPS driver who accidentally struck Lakewood resident’s bin could get fired; Customers Outraged [UPDATE – Driver Will Not Be Terminated]

UPS customers in Lakewood are outraged after learning the driver who accidentally knocked over a resident’s recycling bin could be fired.

“This is absolutely ridiculous,” said a longtime client of the driver. To terminate a driver because of this makes no sense.”

The driver reportedly did not realize he struck the bin, which occurred when he needed to make a wide turn due to a vehicle parked at the corner.

The video was originally posted when the homeowner stated he was unfairly being charged $50 for a replacement. The Mayor, who saw the video, announced the town would no charge the homeowner, but would rather take it out with UPS.

Now, the driver could lose his job over the accident.

“He is the nicest guy you’ve met,” said another customer in Lakewood. “He always goes above and beyond for the customer.”

Some are taking to social media to call out UPS.

Dozens of customers have also indicated they would no longer use UPS should this driver be terminated.

Developing.

UPDATE: 5:15 PM: Mayor Ray Coles tells TLS he had a talk with UPS, and they will not be firing the driver.

“I spoke to both the UPS driver and his supervisor,” says Mayor Coles. “They apologized for the incident. The driver offered to pay for the can out of his own pocket. I had a pleasant conversation with his supervisor and told him the township did not wish for the driver to be let go. He assured me that he will not be dismissed over the incident and that an appropriate discipline will be issued.”

The Mayor added, “I was impressed by the driver’s sincere apology and am glad he will be able to continue the excellent service he has provided to our residents.”

  1. There is no timestamp on the video. Cans are supposed to be placed and removed at specific times. How can that be established from the video? The UPS driver never left the roadway. The facts may show it was the homeowner in violation of DPW regulations.

  2. When the incident ocurred, everyone was screaming that it was outrageous that the homeowner had to pay for a new can. Everyone claimed UPS should pay. I was concerned then that the driver would lose his job because of this. If you curse out UPS, they will want to mollify you and they will take it out on the driver. Now everyone says it was just an accident. Well, if it was an accident then UPS wasn’t responsible either. You’re talking out of both sides of your mouths.

  3. Lets all chip in a dollar or two and save the driver the money. Anyone have ideas how we can do this? If you want to chip in and buy this driver a Chanukah present to show that we really do appreciate him, that would be an idea too. If you know how this can be arranged please post.

  4. How is it possible that the driver didn’t realize anything? I can accept that it was an accident & not on purpose but once he hit it there’s no way he didn’t feel/hear a bang. That wasn’t just a light tap.

  5. Just to be honest
this is part of the moral dilemma that media outlets such as TLS face on a daily basis.
To report or not to report.
The decision was made to publicize the clip and their are consequences.
Perhaps the intention was regarding the $50

but it could be that this was an innocent mistake which because of the publicity garnered by TLS may cost this driver his job.

if thats the case its very sad

    best of luck to all

  6. I know this driver very well as he frequently has pickups from my house.

He is the nicest driver I ever had and goes above and beyond to help me out.

Everyone is entitled to make a mistake but to fire him????

  8. This is our driver!
He comes to do pickups and deliveries almost daily.
He is the most respectful, responsible, and caring guy out there!
He will bend over backwards to service us. He’s friendly to the children and so understanding.
I can’t believe they would even think of termination of such a cherished employee. Come on!
Mistakes happen! Over a GARBAGE CAN?!

  9. TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLY blown out of proportion!!!!
Making a big deal out of a little incident. This is not news worthy at all!!! Poor driver that he had to endure all this.

  10. He was driving awfully fast and very close to the sidewalk. He had to realize he hit it and yet kept on going, Very dangerous driving. Nothing to do with the can… should be disciplined for the driving.

  11. I’m lost. Watching the clip, if a child had been standing there it would have ended in a tragedy Ch”v. That is not a safe way to turn a corner. Period.
