A TLS reporter was assaulted a short time ago as he was covering a DUI arrest in Lakewood.
The victim, a longtime TLS reporter, was at the scene of a DUI arrest on Pine Street when the son of the man being arrested approached the reporter, shoved him, and then struck him in the face.
The attack was witnessed by a police officer and a Shomrim member. When the officer approached the perpetrator, the boy ran, but was tracked by the Shomrim member and swiftly taken into custody.
The reporter sustained bruising, and is preparing to press charges against the perpetrator.
The Anti-Defamation League has requested information regarding the incident.
Statement from TLS Editors: We were shocked and disturbed upon hearing that one of our longtime reporters was assaulted while performing his job and exercising his First Amendment rights. We are glad that the reporter exhibited restraint in this incident, and we have full confidence that the Lakewood Police Department will prosecute this individual to the fullest extent of the law. We will not tolerate anyone intimidating, harassing or assaulting any of our reporters.
UPDATE: Friday morning, Governor Murphy sent out the following Tweet:
May he rot in Gehinnom
While violence is never the answer and I definitely feel bad for the reporter who got hurt, keep in mind that there is a constitution and there is common sense. They both should be utilized together. (just my opinion)
Even if someone is being arrested for a terrible crime that puts others in a life and death situation (DUI).Which happens sadly to “Regular People”.
Keep in mind that its very shameful to be arrested in public, and then for it to be broadcasted online. It just may cause a son to stand up for his fathers shame.
I hope the driver gets taken off the road until he changes his ways and stops putting others in danger.
Dude.. Do you realize this guy was putting HIS OWN KID in danger? Let alone that he would care about others. He was driving with his kid in the car and got pulled over for DUI! He doesn’t care about keeping others safe. The sad reality is though that even after pressing charges, nothing serious is going to happen. He will have something on his record. Big whoop.
Bad taste to video him being arrested. Unecessary. Imagine if it was you.
public shaming and appearance is warranted at times.
this youth decided to attack physically someone.
he is already 99% out of jail. no consequences
look what happened in waukesha wi. the DA let the animal out the door with leniency and an open warrant to kill 6 people and injure almost 60 people..
all started from petty stuff. if there is no record there will be zero chance of anyone taking him to task before he does something much worse.
