For years, the mailboxes at the driveway of the Lakewood branch allowed drivers to pull up to the box, open their window and drop in their mail.
But you no longer can do that, thanks to new mailboxes installed backwards – with no opening facing the driveway. You will now need to get out of your car and walk onto the grass to drop in your mail.
It’s unclear if this was done intentionally or by error.
Since when are Lakewood drivers limited to driving on the road? 😉
Not sure who’s giving you this information this information is inaccurate I’ve been using those mailboxes for years they were always two mailboxes there when was faced one way and one must face the opposite way the one that was facing cars you were only able to put it in the letters you are not able to stick in any packages to put in packages you had to walk onto the grass so these mailboxes were always like that
To Eli, you can clearly see that now BOTH boxes face away from the driveway. There is no longer any way to put in letters from your car window.
And what is so bad if you do have to walk a few feet.
Walking and exercise is very health.
Why would the USPS local manager want to inconvenience the drivers to get out in the snow, rain, and heat? What does he gain by creating a line of cars waiting to insert their envelopes into the mailbox while they wait for the guy in front of the line to finish his business? Is there some sort of sadistic enjoyment he gets out of this?
In a state where plastic bags are outlawed, to think that the mail box would be situated in a manner that will force cars to run extra while the person walks around to put the package in the box, is preposterous!
the LPO is a disaster without this issue. they have open maybe two guys max and its almost always an hour wait. This is the only post officer in town of 150,000 and climbing and the service there is just unacceptable > same issue with UPS , they have one drop off location only open at 1pm and the guy that run is sits there all day going crazy if u don’t park across the lot and has even blocked off the handicap spots( which im not sure is even legal).
I try to go to the Lakewood post next to gourmet glatt 1700 madison avenue whenever possible. Very quick service and very pleasant.
I have had to wait on numerous occasions very, very, very long at the lakewood post office on Swathmore for no good reason. I therefore avoid it as much as possible.
did anyone ask the Post Office if it is a mistake? and if it is, when will it be corrected?
I usually go to the Jackson branch, as it has more staff and is much quicker.

The specific type of mail collection boxes found outside most USPS offices/stations are ‘snorkle’ style boxes. While these snorkles are a convenience to patrons, they have also become convenient to the folks who see the post office as nothing more than a useful target of opportunity. Identity theft/fraud cases have risen substantially during the last 2+ years. Concurrently, fraudsters seeking personally identifying information, sometimes fish mail from within these boxes to aid in verifying their fake bonifides. Unemployment accounts are then opened, allowing false Covid claims to be filed/collected.
Let’s not forget check washing, the classic mail theft/fraud tactic that changes both the payee/amount of stolen checks prior to redemption.
TL;DR: Play it smart. Promptly collect delivered mail. Avoid leaving it sit unattended in your personal box for longer than necessary. If there’s a standard collection box within direct view of your front door, kindly consider installing a web enabled video door bell (ie Ring.) These devices can assist postal inspectors/local police in pursuit/arrest of bad actors, with the added benefit of discouraging parcel pirates from plying their tradecrafts.
