Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Traffic issue

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

My name is Yosef Biala. And I am messaging you today about a traffic issue in the afternoon time when the younger kids start coming home from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monmouth avenue between 7th Street and the firehouse by squankum road get congested like crazy. I wanted to ask you if there’s any chance you can have your traffic guys evaluate the situation and perhaps put crossing guards or something of that nature there? I have also seen multiple almost accidents at the corner of 7th and Monmouth in those hours it is extremely busy and tons of traffic there.

Another question is regarding if there’s any way to regulate school buses from dropping off or picking up directly on route 9 it would be a good move in the right direction cuz I can tell you I’ve seen so many dangerous incidents in those pickups and drop offs it really surprises me how it even goes on for a moment.

Thank you for taking your time into looking into these concerns and thank you for being transparent and having this email service so we can communicate with you. Have A great day.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Yosef,

I will certainly ask traffic and safety to give us some ideas on how to make this intersection safer.

I will also ask the LSTA to look into ways to minimize or eliminate stops on Rt 9. I’m not sure if it is feasible l, but will look into it.

Receiving and answering these questions is one of the best parts of this job. I enjoy being able to let folks know they are heard, even if I cannot enact every suggestion.

Thanks for writing

Ray
